Born in Sarajevo in what was the nation of Yugoslavia, now Bosnia, Hilda was living in Cologne, Germany when she visited London to model. It was only a part-time interest. She had a regular job in manufacturing but was curious about the process of modeling.
Hilda liked the thought of seeing her photos in a men's magazine. It was "racy" and she believed she had the body for it.
